Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has encouraged the various political parties and individuals seeking power to go about their campaign activities circumspectly to avoid putting the country’s hard-earned reputation in peace and democracy in jeopardy.
With the next general election a few months away, His Majesty anticipates simmering political campaigns
Speaking at the climax of his 25th enstoolment anniversary at the Manhyia palace on May 12, 2024, Otumfuo said “This year, is another election year. Our political leaders are already on the campaign trail and there are many months of intense and combative campaigning ahead.”
He called on political players to be mindful of actions and statements with the potential to derail the electoral process.
“After all our past experiences, I remain sanguine that our democracy is safe. Nonetheless we need to remind ourselves that we cannot take things for granted and we must be alert to avoid anything that has the potential to derail electoral process.
“People need the right environment with which they can make informed choices in the interest of the nation. May we forever drink from the fountain of peace in our efforts on the years ahead to be crowned with the grace of the living God and the prosperity that flows from our tireless efforts.”
Ghana will go to the polls once again in December 2024 to elect a leader to replace President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo whose term officially ends on January 7, 2025.
With Dr Mahamudu Bawumia leading the charge for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President John Dramani Mahama leading the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in his quest for a comeback as well as coalition like Alan Kyerematen’s Alliance for Revolutionary Change and Nana Asare Bediako’s New Force, this year’s election is highly anticipated to be competitive.
